Dashboards
Turning data into insights.
Interactive tools I build for water quality, regulatory data analysis, and policy communication.
Water Quality Explorer
An in-browser tool for EPA drinking water data. It combines SDWIS violations, the inventory of every public water system, treatment records and EPA reference codes, and accepts Six Year Review and UCMR files. Filter by system characteristics, aggregate by time and place, chart and summarize the results, browse each system's treatment by facility, and run pre/post, interrupted time series and difference-in-differences intervention analyses with a downloadable summary report. Everything runs on DuckDB in your browser.
Open the Water Quality Explorer↓ The blue buttons in the top corners of the dashboard are clickable — use them to jump to the comparative and detailed analysis views.
Arsenic Demonstration Sites
On January 22, 2001, the EPA lowered the arsenic standard in drinking water from 50 µg/L to 10 µg/L. To support this change, the EPA initiated a program for research and development of more cost-effective treatment technologies and provided technical assistance to operators of small systems to help reduce compliance costs. This Dashboard is an independently developed tool to explore data from this study. It is not affiliated with the EPA and integrates publicly available water-quality data from multiple sources, including the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other local agencies.

Policy & Intervention on Regulation
Arsenic Demonstration Sites
A retrospective cost and performance analysis of EPA's 50 full-scale arsenic treatment pilot sites, examining outcomes following the 2001 arsenic MCL reduction from 50 µg/L to 10 µg/L. This work supports the interactive Shiny dashboard in Dashboards above and has been presented at AWWA WQTC, SWFWRC/AWRA, and FSAWWA conferences.
Distribution System Nitrification Action Plans
A multi-level intervention analysis with the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA) evaluating statewide nitrification action plans and their impact on distribution-system nitrification, disinfectant residuals, and disinfection byproducts (MDBPs). Published as "Evaluating state nitrification action plans for controlling distribution system nitrification and MDBPs" in AWWA Water Science (read here). Presented at AWWA WQTC, FSAWWA, FWRC, and SWFWRC/AWRA conferences.
Biofiltration
Biofiltration Research
Biofilm Management & Modeling
Research on biofilter design and management for micropollutant removal, including deep-learning-based prediction models (LSTM, Neural ODE, SINDy) and microbial community dynamics, supporting Jade's Ph.D. dissertation on biofilm microbiome and emerging contaminant degradation.
Complex Systems Modeling
A comparison of traditional kinetic models and system dynamics representations of substrate removal in biofilters, examining how complex systems modeling approaches capture microbial community behavior and treatment performance — part of the broader biofilter modeling work supporting Jade's Ph.D. dissertation.
Biofilm Detachment Method for Microbial Analysis
Co-developed a novel biofilm-recovery method with the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) that improves the extraction of microbial material from granular activated carbon filters for molecular and flow-cytometric analysis. Published as "Enhancing biofilm recovery from carbon filters for molecular analysis and flow cytometry" in AWWA Water Science (read here).
Health Risk
RHI & PFAS Research
Relative Health Indicator
Applied and extended the Relative Health Indicator (RHI) metric to quantify potential health-risk reductions from PFAS regulation under varying standards, identifying significant regulatory opportunities. This work supported "The impact of the fourth regulatory determination on vulnerable populations," published in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (read here). See more PFAS-related work on the Experience page.
