Natchaya "Jade" Luangphairin

Professional Summary

Ph.D. Candidate, Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of South Florida.

Jade's career embodies interdisciplinary research and a commitment to advancing drinking water treatment, policy, and sustainable infrastructure. As a Ph.D. candidate in Civil Engineering, she brings more than five years of combined research and professional experience and over ten years of laboratory experience across academic, research, and professional settings. She integrates experimental research, quantitative data analysis, regulatory evaluation, and physicochemical and biological treatment processes to address complex water-quality challenges. Her work spans the fate and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), 1,4-Dioxane, EPA regulatory-data analysis, potable reuse optimization, and biofiltration for emerging contaminant removal. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, delivered over ten presentations at national conferences, and advanced the water sector through teaching, mentorship, technical workshops, and leadership in the American Water Works Association.

Research Interest

Drinking water treatment; PFAS and emerging contaminants; biofiltration; potable reuse; environmental policy and regulatory analysis; data-driven treatment optimization; microbial community dynamics; and applications of machine learning and agent-based modeling to biological filtration systems.

Career Endeavor

Jade aims to advance data-driven tools and sustainable drinking water treatment methods to improve water quality and support informed regulatory decision-making in the United States. Through research on emerging contaminants, biofiltration, potable reuse, treatment-process optimization, and risk communication, she aims to develop practical methods, models, and decision-support tools that help water utilities improve treatment performance, comply with evolving regulations, and protect public health. Her work will translate scientific and regulatory data into actionable strategies that strengthen public trust and improve the safety and resilience of drinking water systems in the U.S. and globally.

About my work

Supporting drinking water decisions with analysis and policy insight.

I focus on drinking water research, analytics, and policy to help translate complex operational data into clear, practical decisions for utilities, public agencies, and communities.

Academic Journey

Key milestones in water, analytics, and policy.

A milestone rail for my academic career and work.

2022

Started focused work in water systems

Completed B.S. in Chemical Engineering and stumbled upon the water sector during my years working as a Co-op at the City of Tampa's Water Utility and Undergraduate Research with the DW-TAPS group.

2024

Expanded into analytics

Completed my master's degree working on Distribution System Nitrification and analyzing the impact of changing policies on water quality.

2024-Current

Integrating research, policy, and operations

Started my PhD journey exploring ways of applying community dynamics and agent-based modeling to biofilm development. Engineering intern at a local consulting firm in Tampa, FL

Focus

Water, Data, and Policy

Started translating technical findings into clear summaries and practical recommendations. This led me to build this public portfolio and repository to share my work, document my journey, hold myself accountable, and remind myself to keep making progress.
